Seventeen-year-old Kailey Wasserman sits in her living room with tears streaming past a large scrape on her chin, one of many peppering her bruised body. Wasserman is understandably upset. She was the victim of a brutal hit-and-run as she was jogging in Needham. The driver left her bruised and bleeding on the ground and sped off with nary a thought about the injured teen he or she could have killed.
Kailey Wasserman faces WBZ TV cameras and opens her mouth to where her smile should be. Instead, she is missing two teeth and another is rendered to a fraction of what it used to be. The Boston Globe and WBZ report that in addition to her teeth, Kailey suffered a painful injury to her elbow and cuts and bruises all over her body.
According to authorities, the accident occurred at the intersection of High Rock Street and Marked Tree Road. Kailey explains that the driver blew through a stop sign and hit her, never stopping to see if she was okay. She was hit hard, rolling over the hood of the oncoming car and hitting her face on the pavement when she came to rest.
“They didn’t stop,” Wasserman explained to WCVB. “They went right through the stop sign, came right up to me and seemingly sped up into me. They hit me at an angle.” While the Needham teen keeps things in prospective and says she is thankful her injuries were not more serious, the accident could not have happened at a more inconvenient time for the teen.
Prom is the culmination of the social lives of high school students around the country. While Kailey’s friends are making last minute adjustments to their dresses and selecting the perfect color for their nails, the injured teen is recovering from several painful and visible injuries. She vented to WCVB:
“By the time I got back onto my feet, they were already gone. They sped off very fast. Left me bleeding on the side of the road and didn’t stop to see if I was OK. I have prom on Friday. I got my teeth knocked out.”
Understandably, Wasserman’s family is very upset. Both Kailey and her father referred to the driver as a “coward.” He father expressed his frustration by saying, “they were either drunk or texting or doing whatever they were doing. But face up, pull over. They took off, and they could have killed her.”
Kailey Wasserman was treated by oral surgeons at Tufts Medical Center and later released to recover at home with her family. Police believe they are looking for a white, newer-model Toyota Camry, most likely with Rhode Island plates.
