A multi-vehicle accident involving a car, van, tractor-trailer, and pickup truck seriously injured a mother and her one year old boy on I-93 this past Friday. The woman’s gray Honda was crushed in the middle of the chain-reaction collision which occurred shortly before 10 a.m.
The young boy had become trapped in his car seat as a result of the crash. Rescue workers and bystanders worked to dismantle the car seat which had folded around him. Jean Paul LaPierre was one of the first to arrive at the scene. He said they could hear the baby crying from deep within the crushed car.
“I Just Kept Thinking, We’ve Got to Get That Baby Out.”
According to LaPierre, he and another man helped remove the baby from his mangled car seat and pull him safely from the vehicle. “Sometimes in life you’re called up and you’ve just got to act,” remarked LaPierre. “I just kept thinking we’ve got to get that baby out and make sure both of them could breathe. It was something to be able to get that baby out of there.”
Mother Cut Out of Car With ‘Jaws of Life’
LaPierre and other Good Samaritans used crow bars to attempt to get the mother out, but they were unsuccessful. She was extricated from the car, alive and conscious, after Canton firefighters used the jaws of life to reach her.
The mother was taken by helicopter to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and the boy was taken by ambulance to South Shore Hospital. A state trooper drove the ambulance so that both EMT’s were free to concentrate on the child. He was later transferred to Boston Children’s Hospital. Both mother and child were in serious but stable condition. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
